OUr big singles can sip a bit of oil - and in your case - engine is fully warmed up on hundred mile rides so it may have pulled a bit more through and burned it - you did not make any reference to how fast you ride or how agressively - full throttle hugely increases the vacuum in the cylinder and more oil is sucked past the valve guides.
The only inviolate rule here seems to be - CHECK the oil daily - and keep the level inside the site glass - no matter how ackward that is.
